This photo, taken at a small group meeting at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (*NCAR) in Boulder, yesterday offers a preview of the dire state of the world by 2030. The original interactive image that was show to us was of 2090 and shows, basically, that Earth has become hot… a RED planet, like MARS. I asked the presenter to pull back the images to 2030. This is the result. For those who understand its importance, it carries an ethical responsibility to understand the implications it represents. Over the years, I’ve trained my mind to respond this way: “Here is the way it is, and here is what I’m going to do about it.” Working with a small team of energy smart professionals, I created a “take home” environmental leadership program called Sustainability 2020 for our 10 TRAITS leadership development that starts at home with individuals networked through organizations, schools, and government. If this image moves you, what innovation would you create?

Here’s a brief overview of our 10 TRAITS Sustainability 2020 leadership opportunity with LINKS:

Ready to Turn A Deeper Shade of GREEN?

Which of these four energy smart actions pays you back in 6-months or less?

Switch to LED lighting

Install a programable thermostat

Change HVAC Filters (Heat/Cooling)

Weatherstrip Doors and Windows

They all do. If you’ve already done these four actions, then give yourself 15 GREEN points out of a total of 50 needed to reach the status of “Environmental Leader”.

This well timed program, called Sustainability 2020, includes a free, downloadable POSTER for use at home. It was developed by an energy smart team in Ojai, CA with the goal of creating green, resilient, sustainable communities across America by the year 2020.

Launched in April, the 2020 volunteer development team includes award-winning architect Marc Whitman, green design builder Reggie Wood, leadership & sustainability pioneer Alexia Parks, and green “guru” Dave Intner. Poster links include Ventura’s BuilditSmart program, Ojai Valley Green Coalition, and Colorado State Government charts and statistics on residential energy use.

The program was adopted first by Ojai Rotary and Ojai Rotary-West as a way to engage members in an environmental leadership project.  Called Rotary 2020 by club members, the program has also been adopted by the Boulder Rotary Club (CO), introduced by the Mayor of Des Moines (IA) to his local club, and hand-carried to San Paulo, Brazil to introduce to club presidents representing Rotary clubs around the globe.

And the response?  The Rotary Club of Ojai West now has 42% reporting in, says Reggie Wood, with 50 points or more and a top score of 140 out of a possible 250.

In the spirit of friendly competition, will organizations including churches, schools, and even government take on the challenge now led by Rotary members to ensure that by the Year 2020 our communities truly are sustainable?

*NCAR is the only independent research lab in America without a mission. It is funded to do original research not done by other groups such as NOAA and NASA. In its independent, objective status, it is funded by NSF, and “managed” by a consortium of 103 universities in the U.S. in association with a collaborative of research partners around the globe.
