Dr Joel often wonders aloud: Do people know how to breathe? Do they know how to exercise? Do they know how to feed their body what it really needs? Dr Joel is a medical doctor who hasn’t been sick in more than 40-years, not even a common cold. So when he’s ready to talk about something important, like self-care, I’m eager to listen. “Many people,” he reminds, “are so focused on thinking, creating new ideas, staying on top of the latest breaking news, that they overlook the most important person in their life: themselves.” When we focus on our own body, we elevate it to the status of “personhood.” It is not just something that we use to carry around our 20-pound brain. It is comprised of 40-trillion cells. Trillions of bacteria comprise the Micro Biome that lives in our lower GUT. When we are mindful of the needs of our body, the need to stretch, to relax, to get aerobic…, in other words, when we are mindful in every moment of our body, it will tell us what it needs. In a sense, the trillions of bacteria in our micro biome are our employees!” Treat them and yourself well. Yesterday, I attended a fund-raising event where Naomi Klein spoke about the importance of keeping fossil fuels in the ground, as government policy, on public lands. I agree. However, in a clever turn of phrase, she combined the words revolution and survival. “Our survival requires a revolution,” she said. I respectifully disagree. In today’s volatile world, we don’t need more wars or revolutions. We need MORE WOMEN in decision-making positions with men – at all levels of society. Why women? Why now? Because most of us know at some deep level that it’s time to make a rapid transition away from a world economy based on overconsumption, competition and conflict, to a world based on cooperation, collaboration, and sustainability. Whether the cause is protection of the rainforest, the search for climate solutions, or clean drinking water, the fastest way to change directions is to accelerate the empowerment of women into positions of leadership. More women in leadership also comes with an economic benefit. According to a recent report by The Peterson Institute for International Economics and EY called“Is Gender Diversity Profitable? they reported that 30% more women in upper levels of management results in a 6% boost to net profit. The report leaves this question unanswered: “Would more women mean even more profit?” I have the answer. The answer is “Yes!” Here’s why: In 2004, in war torn Rwanda, President Paul Kagame got approval of a quota of 30% women in Parliament. By 2012, the number of women in Parliament had risen to 56%. With women in the majority, and a focus on healthcare, education and infrastructure needs the country’s economy...

Is there a rise in public attacks against women? If so, what’s the best defense against a bully? Whether in #politics, the workplace, or life in general, the best defense is to not act like a victim. Bullies single out those who lack assertiveness, or are unprepared for counter-attack. Grown-up bullies wreak havoc in their relationships and in the workplace says Psychology Today. My science-based research shows that when placed under great stress, the female brain turns on. Under stress, the female brain is able to break through social conditioning to access natural leadership skills. These natural leadership skills include diplomacy, the engagement of social networks, and an ability to use deep listening to help understand and defuse conflict....
